a wonderful, life's work
Fenton is the reigning expert on the Iroquois and has published extensively on a multitude of subjects relating to them. This is his life's work and it is a tremendous achievement. Not a book to curl up to, nevertheless it is a must for anyone who professes interest in American history. Worth owning.

Green Fields and White Lines: Baseball Poems
Published in Hardcover by McFarland & Company (July, 1995)
Authors: Robert L. Harrison and Andy Nelson
Average review score:

A collection of funny and touching baseball poetry
These poems provide something for everyone who treasures our national pastime. They vary from hilarious (when his team loses the big game, a husband tells his wife that a foul tip from INSIDE their TV shattered the screen), to nostalgic (a child's thrill at opening the season's first pack of baseball cards), to heartfelt (a divorced couple whose son goes to Mets games with mom, Yankee games with dad), to poignant (the heroic death of Roberto Clemente: "The waves have lapped too many times, since your plane of hope went down, robbing us of the last farewell").

There are sections devoted to: Folktales, History, Teams, Milestones, Players, Fans, The Hobby. Harrison's poems resonate with those memories and legends that mean so much to fans - where we were (or wish we were): watching Jackie Robinson's first at bat, Ted Williams' last. Even those magic numbers that mean so much to fans get their due: 4192, 511, 61*, ad infinitum.

Growing Pains: Diaries and Drawings from the Years 1908-1917
Published in Paperback by Minnesota Historical Society (October, 1984)
Authors: Wanda Gag and Karen Nelson Hoyle
Average review score:

A great read and a Betsy-Tacy link
This book was a wonderful insight into the mind of a woman and artist in the early twentieth century. Growing Pains follows the story of Wanda Gag from age 12 to 22 or 23. It is fascinating to see how different life was at that time, and watch a woman with vast creativity and talent as she struggles to survive the poverty of her childhood. How poignant the destitution of her early years, as well as her discovery and development of her talent. Wanda Gag was also a very introspective person, and had a decided trancendentalist slant. It is interesting to read her philosophies about the self which apply even today. I think this book would appeal to people who have an interest in the early twentieth century or illustration. I also recommend it to fans of the Betsy-Tacy books, as Wanda grew up in New Ulm, MN, not far from Mankato (Deep Valley) and during the same time period. She also appears to be aquainted with Delos Lovelace (the husband of Maud Hart Lovelace (the real Betsy) who wrote the series). Later in the book she mentions going to a concert or play with tickets given to her by Delos Lovelace (Before he ever met Maud!). Overall this book was very good and I was extremely sorry to reach the last page.

Authors: Jay Luvaas and Harold W. Nelson
Average review score:

ACW Battlefield Tour Bibles
These series of books are the best available resource for conducting ACW battlefield tours - assuming that your purpose in touring battlefields is to study and understand the applicable tactics, strategy and terrain and to develop an appreciation for the objectives and efforts of the participants. If you go to ACW battlefields to gawk and gossip as an everyday tourist then you do not need to study these guides. If you have an active interest in ACW history, military history in general or fascinating chapters in human history, then these guides are remarkable values, "Best Buys". Thorough but not intimidating, insightful and objective, with no deficiencies noted.

Guys
Published in Paperback by Dramatist's Play Service (March, 2003)
Author: Anne Nelson
Average review score:

A powerful post-9/11 play
There have been a lot of books written in response to the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. But "The Guys," by Anne Nelson, is definitely one that stands out from the pack. This is a two character play. The preface states that it "is based on a true experience."

"The Guys" tells the story of Nick, a New York City fire captain who has lost many men in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. He comes to see Joan, a writer, so that she can help him write eulogies for his fallen men. As the two characters talk about the dead firefighters, Nick opens up and they create testimonies to these men.

This is a very moving work of drama. Although rooted in the events of 9/11, the play touches on issues that transcend that specific historical moment; it's about the place of a writer in society and about the potential power of words as healing tools. It's also about how extraordinary events impact ordinary people.

A director's note states that the play was commissioned in response to the 9/11 events, and opened in December 2001. Recommended as a companion text: "The Laramie Project," co-authored by Moises Kaufman; this is another fact-based play about how people respond to a violent tragedy.

Ham 'n' Egg on Golf : Why Won't This Game Just Leave Us Alone?
Published in Paperback by Whole in One Golf (12 May, 2000)
Authors: Brad "Ham" Nelson and Dan "Egg" Miller
Average review score:

How Ham & Egg drove me to bankruptcy in 5 easy steps....
Brad and Dan do an excellent job of telling their golf story. I just simply couldn't put it down. Hack Looper is a classic! I do believe FootJoy/Titleist's Sign Boy is meant to copy H&E's Hack persona.

Since I discovered their site, shortly after they linked up with Rivals.com, I have gone into golf overdrive. Money has been no object (well, actually it has, but its just money!). These guys are bonifide equipment junkies, and the disease spreads quickly.

If you love golf, this is a book for you. None of that starchy nonsense you read each month in Golf and Golf Digest. This is as good as a pured 3 iron onto an island green! Once you go Ham & Egg, you'll never go back!

this book was beautiful. I am not sure what experiences it takes to be hit by this book--not everyone likes it as much as me. athletics, probably, and years of competition--this book resounded to my memories of these things. but of course I recommend it to anyone. and it is also, I have no doubt, the basis for the movie Rocky.
